From its opening moments, Pipsa Ilpala’s signature act has a way of quieting the room. The juggling sequence begins with one basketball and builds to five. Every throw and movement is crafted around the original score, and the execution is so clean that the act’s technical level is not obvious at first. As the nature of the performance becomes clear, anticipation in the room grows into excitement.
When the basketball sequence appears to bring the act to its end, the music changes. The performance shifts into something stranger and more playful. The car tyre, which has been present onstage from the beginning, takes over. A ball and tyre sequence builds towards a finale that often leaves the audience in momentary disbelief
before the applause.
Pipsa's approach to antipodism has been recognised with the Cirque du Soleil Award for Innovative Artistic Vision and Performance. Wordless, the act asks for no shared language or prior knowledge of circus. Afterwards, people can often be heard saying they have never seen anything like it.
